Structure of the First Year Interim Research Proposal In the first year interim research proposal, students should

demonstrate a broad understanding of chosen area, present a plan for deepening that understanding, and have identified the research problem to be investigated. The proposal should not exceed 2,500 words and should follow the structure as follows. 1. Outline of area of study (500 words) o What is the broad field within which your PhD topic falls? o What is the relevance of and the rationale for choosing this are of enquiry? 2. Identification of the main theorists who have made a contribution to this area of research (800 words) o What are the key arguments in the chosen area of research? o What is your critique of their work? 3. Outline of problem to be investigated (500 words) o What is the gap in the main body of knowledge? o What is your research question? o How will your research contribute to the main body of knowledge? 4. Outline of research methodology (500 words) o How do you expect to carry out your research? o What specific techniques of investigation and analysis do you consider you might want to use? 5. Outline of work plan for term 2 and 3 (150 words) 6. Identification of resources needed (50 words)

Structure of the Second/Third Year Interim Progress Report In the progress report, student should demonstrate significant progress on the theoretical work and clarification of research design and research methods. For third year students, they should also demonstrate significant progress on the investigative work that will form the basis of the thesis.
