LINE OF DEMARCATION
To settle the differences between the two Roman Catholic countries, the leader of the Catholic Church, the Pope, declared a north-south LINE OF DEMARCATION which divided the world in half, the East belonging to Portugal and West to Spain.

MERCANTILISM
It was assumed that the amount of wealth in the world was constant. As one countrys wealth increased, another countrys wealth would decrease. Wealth was measured in gold & silver.

Colonies were developed to avoid having to import from other countries, while at the same time, creating export markets.

Colonies provided a source of raw materials, a market for manufactured goods, and an opportunity for investment.

Colonies provided military support and protection of trade routes.
