How does the character of Macbeth change in the play Macbeth?

1. Foreshadowing - when something hints at a later event in the play 2. Catharsis- the release of tension for the audience; a (hysterical) outpouring of emotion when the tragic hero has their downfall at the end of the play 3. Hamartia- a fatal or tragic flaw 4. Metonymy- when the part represents the whole

5. Soliloquy- a speech delivered directly to the audience by one character where they voice their thoughts
6. Tragic hero- an admirable man or woman with high social status who has hamartia resulting in their downfall 7. Dramatic irony- when the audience knows more than one or more of the characters 8. Irony- when something has a hidden meaning opposite to the surface meaning/ an oddly contradictory situation

In your main paragraphs, include the following: Link to the previous paragraph (use connectives from the list in your planner to help you by saying how Macbeth is similar or different to before

Make a point- briefly state how Macbeth behaves/ feels in the quotation and why Give evidence this should be a quotation, normally about 2 lines long (one or two shorter ones are acceptable)
Analyse the evidence (more details on next slide)

The analysis should be very detailed, as it is the section that gets you most marks.
You could include some of the following: What is Macbeth thinking / feeling at this point? Why How does the text demonstrate or imply this? How do his thoughts/ feelings contrast with earlier/ later in the play? Macbeths similarities or differences to other characters His interaction with other characters The way the themes/ motifs are presented The extent to which the audience sympathises with Macbeth
