(The Newberry – Case G 10896.9, sheet 3 [oversize], U)
This expanded topographical view of the city was created by the U.S. Geological Survey in 1902. An early version of Lincoln Park, with its curving walking paths and rowing lagoon, is visible on the North Side, as is the South Side's Jackson Park, with its own lagoons and Wooded Island. But much of the coastline looks surprisingly barren compared to today's lakefront; among other landmarks, it's missing Montrose and Belmont Harbors, Navy Pier, Northerly Island and Promontory Point.
