Title Level

Use the properties of vectors to solve physical problems 5 Credits 2

Purpose

People credited with this unit standard are able to: use basic properties of vectors to solve problems; calculate and interpret the dot product and cross products of 2 vectors to solve problems; calculate and interpret triple products in solving problems; and calculate and interpret derivatives of vectors to solve problems.

Classification

Achieved

For outcome 1, basic properties must include: unit vectors; magnitude; vector addition, subtraction, multiplication by scalar quantities; direction cosines; and i, j, k notation. For outcome 2, problems include: projections, angle between two vectors; equations of planes; normals to planes; work done; applications to electromagnetism; areas of parallelograms. For outcome 3, triple products must include both a x b x c and a.(b x c). Applications may include electromagnetism and volume of a parallelepiped. For outcome 4 problems include: relations between position, velocity and acceleration vectors; tangents and normals to curves in two dimensions expressed in parametric form.

Industry Training Organisations must be granted consent to assess against standards by NZQA before they can register credits from assessment against unit standards. Providers and Industry Training Organisations, which have been granted consent and which are assessing against unit standards must engage with the moderation system that applies to those standards. Consent requirements and an outline of the moderation system that applies to this standard are outlined in the Accreditation and Moderation Action Plan (AMAP). The AMAP also includes useful information about special requirements for organisations wishing to develop education and training programmes, such as minimum qualifications for tutors and assessors, and special resource requirements.
