AUTOMATIC PHASE CHANGER

Abstract
Automation plays a predominant role in the modern world. In 3-phase applications, sometimes low voltage appears in any phase. It is an undesirable change which needs to be avoided as it damages the equipment. In order to make the equipment to work properly, normal voltage has to be restored. This can be done by shifting the load manually from the phase having abnormal voltage to the phase having normal voltage. Manual phase shifting cannot be done immediately at the instant of abnormal voltage. It consumes sometime in which the equipment may be damaged. So, automation has to be done in shifting the load from one phase to another phase to overcome this drawback.. The Automatic phase changer circuit provides correct voltage to the load from other phases where normal voltage is available. Using it all the load on the 3-phases can work even when correct voltage is available only on a 1-phase. The circuit is built around a transformer, comparator, transistor and relay. Three identical sets of this circuit, one each for three phases, are used. The power supply provided to the transformers is stepped down which is rectified by the diodes and filtered by a capacitor to produce the operating voltage for OP-AMP. Depending upon the voltage at the output of OP-AMP the relay gets energized or de-energized and with this phase having normal voltage can be chosen. Automatic phase changer finds application in small offices, residences and other places where the total connected load is in acceptable limits.
