A Plan for School Safety I never, ever thought I would ever, ever agree with anything the NRA

has to say. The day before they announced their plan, however, I thought about this plan. I was confused when the NRA sort of supported it! Now, I think theyre dead wrong about semi-automatic assault weaponsno one in the United States needs one for any reason ever and there must be a ban and it must be retroactive. Having said that, heres my plan: A retired military person, armed, in fatigues, posted at all the doors of all schools. I think retired military volunteers, very carefully screened volunteers , an abundance of them, will serve willingly. Their very presence alone will act as a deterrent. The only expense will be for screening. All school districts employ psychologists who are fully qualified to screen volunteers. Now before the outcry, think! Armed guards are posted at grocery stores, malls, courthouses, airports, post offices, churches, bus depots, zoos, museums, city and mountain parks, amusement parks, and street corners. We protect lettuce, jewelry, books, clothes, mineral displays, Cinnabun and Build-a-Bear, etc. We protect travelers, mail, worshippers, and people who are homeless. It is time to protect our children and teachers at the same level we protect produce and meat and stuffed animals. It is not as though our children never see armed guards, nor are most particularly traumatized by their presence. Most parents teach children armed guards (police, military, security) are there to keep them safe. I may be wrong, but I do not recall an incident of mass murder perpetrated by an armed guard.
