Demonstration 2: Three Women

CaPtuRe the Likeness in a PenCiL sketCh Draw the likeness with a 3B pencil. (I usually do a value study

aPPLy the FiRst Wash Apply your colors wet-into-wet, using a light-value wash. I let the

colors run and mingle on my angled paper, leaving white spaces for highlight areas. Then let the painting dry. Continue to work on the two women on the left, using medium values to shape the light and shadow patterns. At this stage, the woman on the right is still in the original wash. I will continue to keep the women on the left a step ahead of the woman on the right so that you can compare and see the progress.

CReate Light and shadoW PatteRns Add medium values to the woman on the right to shape the light

and shadow patterns. Then work on some of the details and features of the two women on the left. Compare the details between the two sides of the painting to see the development process.

ComPaRe, Remove Liquid FRisket and add detaiL

Notice that the two women on the left have reached the final stage. The woman on the right still needs more details and darker values, especially in her facial expression and hand. Remove the liquid frisket from their jewelry and add more detail. add daRk vaLues The finished work shows the woman on the

right now has much darker values, as does the background. The details also increase this perception. Now these three women are really having fun chatting.
