NO HAVEN

There is no haven on the path of life That is why the birds have learnt to fly Though they surely know they live to die There is no haven on the path of life That is why Mummy loathes a smiling stranger His lips may be drapes for fangs of danger There is no haven on the path of life That is why the least sound gives Granny a fright And her frail snails hide from owls at night There is no haven on the path of life That is why wealth walks hand in hand with fear And the mice ignore the cheese till the coast is clear There is no haven on the path of life That is why shot weighs sacks in the shed And soldiers lie with their guns in bed There is no haven on the path of life That is why the widows lips shiver in prayers And ears blush in the kisses of whispers There is no haven on the path of life That is why the heart is often dark with secrets And cautious eyes peck at souls in lonely streets There is no haven on the path of life But I will not sit and cry a river For I can sail not on my tears to the doors of pleasure Theres no haven on the path of life
