Write a story using correct parts of speech and appropriate conventions. Illustrates the story and writes labels to name people, places, things and actions.

Student plans a first draft by generating ideas for writing. Student then writes the story on topic in sequential order.

80-89

Student plans a first draft by generating ideas for writing however, student then writes on topic but not in sequential order. Student attempts to plan a first draft and write a story, but may in fact only describe. There are no elements that indicate a story such as sequence. It is vague and disorganized. Student ineffectively plans a first draft and/or writes a story unrelated to the topic. Student dictates the story.

Student accurately writes actions (verbs) in correct tense (past, present and future) and words that name persons, places, or things (nouns), including singular/ plural and common/ proper nouns for their picture. Student can mostly write verbs and nouns. Some teacher assistance may be required.

Student mostly uses grade level appropriate spelling, capitalization and punctuation, spells CVC words and word wall words. Story has many errors in spelling, capitalization and punctuation, inconsistently spells CVC words and word wall words correctly.

70-79

Student can minimally write verbs and nouns. Occasional teacher assistance is required.

Student is unable to label words by parts of speech without substantial teacher assistance.

Students story is insufficient in use of conventions, CVC patterned words and word wall words spelled correctly.
