C. Executive Summary
This memo establishes the main differentiators between WIMAX 802.16d and 802.16e. It provides the optimal scheme of implementation for each version, and gives an additional means of decision to choose the technology depending on the intended usage.

D. 802.16d vs 802.16e
WiMAX 802.16d Fixed / Nomadic Network High Throughput Low Overhead & Signaling Easier implementation High Capacity LOS or Near LOS Applications*
*standard is optimized for specific application

WiMAX 802.16e Mobile Network High Throughput High Overhead & Signaling Complex Implementation Low Capacity Non-LOS applications*

The 16e version is suitable only for mobile environments, it has its own benefits that are substantial for Mobile applications. The 16d is Nomadic, means the CPE location can be changed. In the case of fixed broadband implementation, it is obvious that WiMAX 802.16d should be the choice.

E. 802.16d
This version shall be selected when: o CPE locations are known o CPE locations are not changing instantaneously o Soft Handover is not required (Hard Handover is still possible) o Network requires better capacity (lower control overheads) o Larger coverage is required per site o No neighbors required o QoS is possible in both 16d and 16e Although 16e is more advanced than 16d, the latter remains much better suited (higher capacity), much more cost effective (less number of sites) and much more efficient (implementation less complex than for 16e) in case of specific deployment of fixed CPE.
