Math 1c Spring 2012 HOMEWORK SET 7 DUE AT 3PM ON TUESDAY, MAY 29

Note: Each problem is worth 10 pts. They are from chapters 7.2 - 7.6 of Marsden and Tromba. (1) Evaluate the line integral C 2xyz dx + x2 z dy + x2 y dz for an arbitrary curve C that starts at (1, 1, 1) and ends at (1, 2, 4). (2) Consider the surface given parametrically by x = 2u, y = u2 + v, z = v 2 . Find an equation for its tangent plane at the point (0, 1, 1). (3) Find an expression for a unit normal vector to the surface given parametrically by x = cos u sin v, y = sin v sin u, z = cos u for 0 u , 0 v . Identify this surface. (4) Find a parametrization of the surface given by the equation x3 + 3xy + z 2 = 2 with x > 0. Use this to nd the tangent plane to the surface at the point (1, 1/3, 0). Check your answer by nding the tangent plane using the gradient of the dening equation. (5) Compute the area of the surface given by x = r cos , y = 2r sin , z= with 0 r 1, 0 2. Sketch the surface. (6) Evaluate
S

xyzdS where S is the triangle with vertices (1, 0, 0), (0, 2, 0), and (0, 1, 1).

(7) Find the mass of a spherical surface S of radius R such that at each point p of S, the density is equal to the distance from p to some xed point p0 . (8) Find the center of gravity of the part of the unit sphere with all coordinates positive. (The intersection of the sphere with the positive octant.) (9) The cylinder x2 +y 2 = x divides the unit sphere S into two regions S1 and S2 where S1 is the region inside the cylinder and S2 is the region outside. Find the ratio of areas A(S2 )/A(S1 ). (10) Let S be the surface dened by x2 + z 2 = 1 with x 0 and 0 y 1 and let the velocity eld of a uid be given by the vector eld ( y, 0, 0) (in meters/sec). Compute how many cubic meters of uid per second are crossing the surface S.
