OR
C. be promoted from the Greek Non-Thoroughbred register when the following conditions are all satisfied.
a.

The horse can prove satisfactorily eight consecutive crosses with "Thoroughbreds" including the cross of
which it is the progeny.

b.

The horse can show in its pedigree, such performances in racing open to thoroughbreds as to warrant its
assimilation with them.

c.

The promotion is approved by the unanimous agreement of the International Stud Book Committee.

2. ELIGIBILITY FOR FOAL REGISTRATION

2.1 It is a condition of registration that all foals born in 2001 and thereafter are DNA/blood typed and parentage
tested by a laboratory officially appointed by the Jockey Club of Greece.
2.2 The horse must be the result of a Stallions mating with a Mare which is the physical mounting of a Mare by
a Stallion with intromission of the penis and ejaculation of semen into the reproductive tract. As an aid to the
mating and if authorised by the Stud Book Authority of a country certifying the Thoroughbred, a portion of
the ejaculate produced by the Stallion during such mating may immediately be placed in the reproductive
tract of the Mare being bred. ?????
2.3 A foal is not eligible for registration unless a Certificate of Covering and a Live Foal/No Foal Report have
been submitted by the Breeder to the Stud Book Authority and the foal has been identified and sampled by an
official or authorized vet of the Jockey Club of Greece.
2.4 An application to register a foal may be refused either if its reported colour is inconsistent with the registered
coat colours of its stated parents, or if the reported gestation period of its dam is significantly at variance with
the generally accepted limits.
2.5 Natural gestation to produce an eligible foal must take place in, and delivery must be from, the body of the
same Mare in which the Foal was conceived. Any Foal resulting from or produced by the processes of
Artificial Insemination, Embryo Transfer or Transplant, Cloning or any other form of genetic manipulation
not herein specified, shall not be eligible for recorded.
Nnotwithstanding the above where reasonable doubts exist about the eligibility of a foal (e.g. Parentage test
only against its sire or only against its dam) the Stud Book Authority may reject registration. In this case the
owner may appeal against this decision to the Board of Stewards whose decision will be final.
3. LICENSING OF THOROUGHBREDS FOR BREEDING
3.1. REGISTRATION OF STALLIONS
All male horses, in order to be eligible for breeding, have to be registered as stallions starting from the 2010
season (15/02), by the Stud Book Authority of the Jockey Club Of Greece until 14/2/2010, one day before the
beginning of the covering season (15/2). The stallion registration is annual.
For the registration of a stallion, the following procedure must be followed:

Complete the relevant application form ( Registration of stallion application), which then is sent to
the Jockey Club of Greece between 01/12 and 14/02 every year, accompanied with the passport of
the horse. In case of loss of the passport, an application for a duplicate passport application must be
completed.

The above application must be accompanied by acceptable documents verifying the ownership
which must be submitted to the Jockey Club.
ACCEPTABLE OWNERSHIP DOCUMENTS
o
Invoice of Sale or
o
Official declaration of sale by the Salesman or
o
A Private Agreement of ownership assignment between the salesman and the buyer with an
attested signature of the salesman and the buyer for B. and C. (unless they are both present at
the submission of the document to the employee of the Jockey Club of Greece).

The fee for the registration of stallion, within the acceptable time limits, until the 14 th of February
every year, for a Greek-bred horse or for a foreign bred horse that participated in races in Greece is
100 (each year). This fee can automatically be charged on the owners/breeders account or paid
cash.

Since all the registration requirements are fulfilled the covering book for every stallion is handed to
the stallion owner or his representative. There are 3 copies for every numbered covering certificate.
(one for official use, one for the stallion owner and one for the mare owner)

The signature on the covering sheet of the stallion owner, is considered that he no longer has any
financial claim from the mare owner. In other case, the owner of the stallion does not sign the
covering sheet and informs the Stud Book of the Jockey Club of Greece in writing.
If an owner of a stallion has not registered his stallion within the acceptable time limit (until 14/2 at
the lowest fee of 100), then the fee for late registration is 200 from 15/2 to 31/7 (covering season).
In case a male horse is imported during the covering season or a male horse is proven to have retired
and gone to stud the fee is 200.
All covering books are returned to the Stud Book of the Jockey Club of Greece as follows:
o
until 30 September of the covering year, no fee
o
from 1/10 until 30/11, fee 100
o
from 1/12 until 14/2, fee 300

concerning a new mare which hasnt been registered as a broodmare, the Stud Book department will
notify the owner, who will have to follow the proper procedure until 31/12 of the covering year (late
registration), with no extra charges.
If the owner fails to register the broodmare until 31/12, he will be charged with a 250 fee as long as he
registers the mare as a brood mare the year that the foal is born (1/1/ and on). Otherwise he will be
charged with a 1000 fee provided that he registers the brood mare within 31/12 of the year that the foal
is considered 3 years old.
4. COVERING SEASON
The covering season starts on the 15th of February and ends on the 31st of July.
5. COVERING CERTIFICATES
5.1

5.2

Every stallion owner must issue a Covering Certificate of for each mare covered in which the following
details are mentioned:
- Name of the mare owner.
- Name of the mare.
- Name of the stallion.
- Date of the first and the last covering.
Also a declaration confirming that artificial insemination and embryo transfer or transplant or cloning or
any other form of genetic manipulation not herein mentioned, were not used and that the identity of the
mare was verified against her passport before covering took place. This Certificate should be given to the
mare owner and a copy sent to the Jockey Club of Greece within 10 days of the end of the covering
season.
The mares that have not been covered while still in breeding should be mentioned in the special list of
"not covered mare" otherwise they will be considered to be withdrawn from breeding. When a Covering
Certificate relating to a particular mare who has not conceived for one or more covering seasons has not
been submitted, then a Live Foal Report will not be acceptable unless a suitable explanation about the
unreported years has been submitted to the Jockey Club of Greece and accepted by the Board of
Stewards.

6. REGISTRATION OF FOALS

6.1

At the beginning of each year pre-printed Live Foal/ No Foal Reports will be sent to the breeders by the
Jockey Club of Greece according to coverings of the previous year. If a breeder does not receive these
reports by the time the foal is born, he must request them from the Jockey Club of Greece. The Live
Foal/No Foal Report is an official document to be completed by the breeder to declare the results of the
coverings as well as a declaration that the covering that took place was natural and not embryo transfer
or transplant or cloning or any other form of genetic manipulation, not herein mentioned.
The Live Foal/No Foal Report consists of two separate sections.
The first page is completed only in case of birth of a live foal and includes:
a. The name of the breeder.
b. The name of the sire
c. The name of the dam.
d. The date of birth of the foal.
e. The sex of the foal.
f. The coat colour of the foal.
g. Twins must be indicated
The second section must be completed when no live foal is born or if it dies soon after birth. It includes
the name of the sire and dam and the reason that there is no foal (e.g. barren, aborted, died since birth,
dead twins etc).
The Breeder must enter all facts on the Live Foal/ No foal Report and must sign it. It must then be sent to
the Jockey Club of Greece within 15 days of the birth of the foal or within 15 days of the discovery of
being no live foal to record, and at least until the 30th of September of the foaling year without fee
charge.
6.2 After the Jockey Club of Greece has received the Live Foal/ No Foal Reports the identification and the
parentage testing of the foal will be arranged.
These procedures are conducted simultaneously by an official vet of the Jockey Club of Greece or by a
vet designated by the Jockey Club of Greece. To identify the foal a special document, the Certificate of
Foal Registration/ DNA sampling Certificate must be completed.
This document consists of two separate sections:
The front side includes the following data which are to be completed:
a. The name of the sire and dam.
b. The sex, coat colour and the date of birth of the foal.
c. The diagram and the written description of the foal.
d. The Life Number of the foal.
e. The name, signature and stamp of the official vet.
f. The name of the breeder.
The reverse constitutes the DNA/blood type sampling report and includes the following:
a. A statement by the vet concerning DNA sampling.
b. The name and the coat colour of the sire and dam of the foal as well as the date of foaling and the coat
colour of the foal. The above document is signed by both the official or authorized vet who has
conducted the identification and the drawing of the DNA samples and the breeder of the foal who
through his signature certifies the items based upon his information and agrees that the correct samples
were taken from the correct foal and accepts the identification as accurate.
6.3 Upon satisfactory completion of the Certificate of Foal Registration/ DNA sampling and the supply of an
acceptable DNA sample to the Jockey Club of Greece, and provided that the results of the test conducted
by the laboratory do not show any exclusion of the stated parentage of the foal, a Passport for the foal
will be issued.
6.4 The satisfactory description of the foal and the provision of an acceptable DNA sample must be
completed before weaning. All identity documents must contain at least 5 identity features.
6.5 ARREARS OF LIVE FOAL REPORT
o
A 50 fee is imposed for every foal from 1 October until 31 December of foals born date.
o
A 200 fee is imposed on from 1 January until 31 December of the year that the foal is considered
yearling.
o
A 500 fee is imposed on from 1 January until 31 December of the year that the foal is considered
2 years old.
o
A 1000 fee is imposed on from 1 January until 31 December of the year that the foal is considered
3 years old.
7. REPORT OF DEATH
In case of death of a registered horse the owner must, within 15 days report it to the Jockey Club of Greece and
send a Death Certificate issued by a veterinary surgeon concerning the cause of death together with the
passport of the dead horse.
8. INSPECTION OF STUDS

The Stewards of the Jockey Club of Greece have the discretion to appoint licensed officials to inspect studs in
Greece. If a foal is born before January 1st it may be registered in the Greek Stud Book with the approval of
the Stewards but it will become a yearling on January 1st following the actual date of its birth.
9. ISSUE OF PASSPORT
9.1. A passport has been issued for every horse foaled in 1991 and onwards and registered in the Greek Stud
Book. For horses foaled earlier than 1991 a foal identity document has been issued. These documents
include the name and the pedigree of the horse, the diagram and the written description of the foal, the
endorsement of acceptance by owners trainers or their appointed agents, medicinal treatment and
medication records, vaccinations inspection and endorsement for foreign travel for racing or breeding
purposes, health information and other society registrations. The passports are not a certificate of
ownership.
9.2. While the passport remains the property of the Greek Jockey Club it must accompany the horse at all
times. It is also the responsibility of all owners, breeders and trainers to use the Passport to check the
identity of each horse in their care, and to sign the relevant page in the Passport to signify that the
identity has been confirmed. Any identity doubt should be reported to the Jockey Club of Greece
immediately.
9.3. Any loss of the passport must be reported to the Jockey Club of Greece immediately. For the issue of a
duplicate Passport, new markings will be taken from the horse and be compared with those kept in file.
If no difference is shown a duplicate Passport will be issued after payment of a fee (see Fee Schedule) to
include the costs of obtaining the new markings. Where there are any identity doubts, DNA/blood typing
test will be carried out at the expense of the applicant.
10. OFFICIAL INSPECTION
When a horse is first sent to the racecourse, or at any other stage designated by the Jockey Club of Greece, the
official Veterinary surgeon will check the identity of the horse against its Passport. New acquired markings
may be added to this Passport, or where any doubt exists as to the true identity of a horse, the vet may require
that a sample is taken for a DNA/blood type test, together with new markings.
11. NAMING OF FOALS
11.1 To name a foal, new markings must be supplied on the Name Registration Form/ Microchip
Implantation, which is included in the passport on a separate page, by an official vet of the Jockey
Club of Greece. At this stage, (new markings), the vet of the Jockey Club of Greece implants a
microchip which is supplied by the Jockey Club and completes the Microchip Implantation Form
which is signed by the vet who implanted the relevant microchip and the owner/trainer who was
present at the time of implantation. The microchip is implanted in the area of the left mid.crest.
MICROCHIP IMPLANTATION FORM
The microchip Implantation Form includes the following data, microchip number (adhesive label),
name of the horse, year of foaling, name of dam.
The above document is signed by both the official or authorized vet who has conducted the
implantation and the owner/trainer of the foal who through their signature certify that the correct
label has been attached and accept the identification as accurate.

11.2
11.3
11.4

11.5
