Geotechnical and Environmental Problems

By AHMAD SAYFUL MOHAMAD

Shear Strength

The strength of materials is the greatest stress it can sustain

Depends primary on interactions between particles.

Soil derives it shear strength from

Cohesion between particles

Cementation between sand grains. Electrostatic attraction between clay.

Frictional resistance between particles.

Problems in Engineering

Effect of wind Variation in temperature and moisture

Plasticity Mobility

Properties of clay

Roles of Clay
Wet clay are effective lubricant and when enough quantity of clay intermixed with the coarser granular portions of soil, lubrication will develop when enough water is added. Ability of soil to resist deformation depend on the internal friction; wet clay has ability to reduce or cancel it. Increase the resistance by improving the cohesion Cohesive resistance is induced almost entirely by the clay fraction.

Piling Problems in Limestone

Landslide

o A geological phenomenon which includes a wide range of ground movement. o Landslide categories; Falls. Slides Flows Topples Spread

Types of Landslide

Subsidence

The motion of a surface as it shifts downward relative to a datum such as sea-level.
