Do Year Eight Boys At N.I.S.T Spend Longer On Facebook Each Day Than Year 8 Girls At N.I.S.T?
Introduction:
at the moment. For this unit, we had to do a project that involved creating a question to send out to people and then recording and analyzing that data you collected. Then you had to write a report about the data and this is my report. My research question had to do with how long kids spend on Facebook each night. In this report, I will show you the results of my inquiry.
My Research Question: Do Year Eight Boys At N.I.S.T Spend Longer On Facebook Each Day Than Year 8 Girls At N.I.S.T?
Hypothesis:
I think that year eight girls at N.I.S.T spend longer on Facebook than year eight boys. I think this because, stereotypically, boys are more sporty than girls and spend longer outside playing sport than inside on their computers. I also think this because, whenever Im on Facebook, usually more of my friends that are girls are online than my friends that are boys.
I chose this topic simply because I am quite interested to see if the stereotype that boys spend longer outside then girls is true for the kids in year eight at N.I.S.T. I was on Facebook when I chose my research question (I was at home, dont worry Mrs. Lee) so I just thought I would do one about Facebook.
Data Collection:
in year eight however I kept running into 8B at inconvenient times so I wasnt able to collect data for 8B. That was a shame because I wanted my data to be as accurate as possible by asking every kid in year eight. I basically went around in each class asking how long each individual person spent on Facebook on average every day. Below is my table that I used to put all my raw data into.
8a 8a 8c 8c 8d 8d 8e 8e Boys Girls Boys Girls Boys Girls Boys Girls Average Time On FB
The Graphs:
individual class and is helpful if you want to look in more detail at my data. It is basically the same as my second graph but spilt up into each individual class. I found the mean of the data from each gender in each class.
Analysis:
There are several different things that you can tell when looking at this graph. Firstly, it shows that year eight girls spend longer on
Analysis:
As you can see here, the column on the right is clearly quite a bit higher than the one on the left. That means that an average girl in year eight does indeed spend longer on Facebook than an average boy in year eight. I think that this is quite a lot clearer than the other graph because you can look at it and within seconds see what its about and the results.
I think that my data collection was pretty successful. Of course it could have been better if I had gotten data from 8b because the boys in 8b may spend a long time on Facebook (possibly long enough to take the average time for boys above the girls) but apart from that, I was happy that I got around to four classes and I wouldnt change my method of data collection if I did this again. I dont think emailing a survey would have been a good idea because I would get some people who were just too lazy to comment on my survey.
Improvements:
Apart from the fact that 8b didnt answer my survey; I think that everything went almost exactly how I wanted it to go.
Conclusion/Summary:
