Award-winning Lecturer, Filmmaker, Author, and Activist, Jean Kilbourne has been a pioneer in documenting and bringing to national attention the impacts of the image of women in advertising.

As Jean Kilbourne has pointed out in her "Killing Us Softly: Advertising's Image of Women" film series, the objectification of women in the media can cause women to feel disconnected from their bodies. In this presentation, she examines this disconnection and illustrates how marketers encourage us to use food as a way to deal with the pain it causes. She uses many examples of ads that offer us a relationship with food and that present food as the partner, the friend, and even the lover. At the end of this presentation, participants will be able to: 1. Critique food ads and understand their underlying messages 2. Describe how advertisers use psychological information about women to encourage sales of food and diet products 3. Discuss how eating has become a moral issue for women and girls. About the speaker: Jean Kilbourne is internationally recognized for her groundbreaking work on the image of women in advertising and her critical studies of alcohol and tobacco advertising. Her films, lectures, and television appearances have been seen by millions of people throughout the world. She was named by The New York Times Magazine as one of the three most popular speakers on college campuses. She is the author of the award-winning book Cant Buy My Love: How Advertising Changes the Way We Think and Feel and So Sexy So Soon: The New Sexualized Childhood and What Parents Can Do to Protect Their Kids. The prize-winning films based on her lectures include Killing Us Softly, Spin the Bottle, and Slim Hopes. She is a frequent guest on radio and television programs, including The Today Show and The Oprah Winfrey Show. She has served as an advisor to the Surgeon General and has testified for the U.S. Congress. She holds an honorary position as Senior Scholar at the Wellesley Centers for Women.
