CHBE 244-Chemical Engineering Thermodynamics Problem Set 1 To be marked by: Wei Wang

Winter 2013 Due Date: 2013-01-25

1. A vessel having a volume of 100ft3 contains 1ft3 of saturated liquid water and 99ft3 of saturated water vapor at 14.7 lbf/in2. Heat is transferred until the vessel is filled with saturated vapor. Determine the heat transfer for this process.

2. A sample of argon of mass 6.56 gr occupies 18.5 dm3 at 305 K. (a)Calculate the work done when the gas expands isothermally against a constant external pressure of 7.7 kPa until its volume has increased by 2.5 dm3. (b)Calculate the work that would be done is the same expansion occurred reversibly. 3. A sample consisting of 2.00 mol He is expanded isothermally at 22C from 22.8 dm3 to 31.7 dm3 (a) reversibly, (b) against a constant external pressure equal to the final pressure of the gas, and (c) freely (against zero external pressure). For the three processes calculate q, w, U, and H.
