1. A BPSK modulator has a local oscillator frequency of 10 MHz and an amplitude of 5 volts. The input data stream has a data rate of 3.333 Mbps. (a) Compute the bit interval (Tb) in seconds per bit.

Tb =

1 1 = = 3 10 7 s = 300 10 9 s = 300 ns per bit 6 R 3.333 10

(b) Compute the period (TLO) of the local oscillator frequency in seconds per cycle.
TLO = 1 f LO = 1 = 1 10 7 s = 100 10 9 s = 100 ns per cycle 6 10 10

(c) For the bit sequence 0, 1, 1, 0, sketch the BPSK signal. Label the axes. T 300 ns per bit Number of cycles per bit = N cpb = b = = 3 cycles per bit TLO 100 ns per cycle
5 cos(2 f LO t ) for a 1 bit Since the amplitude is 5 volts the BPSK signal = 5 cos(2 f LO t ) for a 0 bit

2. An ASK modulator has a local oscillator frequency of 10 MHz. The input data stream has a data rate of 3.333 Mbps. The ASK modulator produces an amplitude of 3volts for a 0 bit and 6 volts for a 1 bit. For the bit sequence 0, 1, 1, 0, sketch the ASK signal. Label the axes.

(a) Compute the bit interval (Tb) in seconds per bit Tb = 10 ns per bit (b) Compute the data rate in bits per second 1 1 R= = = 1 10 8 bits per second = 100 10 6 bits per second = 100 Mbps Tb 10 10 9 (c) Compute the frequency of the local oscillator in Hz. T 10 10 9 seconds per bit = 2.5 10 9 seconds per cycle TLO = b = 4 cycles per bit N cpb

f LO =

1 1 = = 0.4 10 9 cycles per second 9 TLO 2.5 10 seconds per cycle

= 400 10 6 cycles per second = 400 MHz (d) What can the ON-OFF keying signal be expressed as in the time interval 0 t 10 ns ? s (t ) = 5 sin (2 f LO t ) for 0 t < 10 ns = 5 sin (2 400 10 6 t ) for 0 t < 10 ns

For the entire interval 0 to 20 ns, the ON-OFF keying signal can be expressed as for 0 t < 10 ns 5 sin (2 400 10 6 t ) s (t ) = for 10 t < 20 ns 0
