A BILL
To amend the Higher Education Act of 1965 to provide
for the forgiveness of Perkins loans to members of the
armed services on active duty.

1 Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representa-

2 tives of the United States of America in Congress assembled,
3 SECTION 1. CANCELLATION OF STUDENT LOANS FOR MILI-

4 TARY SERVICE.

5 Section 465(a) of the Higher Education Act of 1965

6 (20 U.S.C. 1087ee(a)) is amended—
7 (1) in paragraph (2), by striking subparagraph
8 (E) and inserting the following:

1 ‘‘(D) as a member of the Armed Forces of the
2 United States on active duty, as defined in section
3 101(d)(1) of title 10, United States Code;’’;
4 (2) in paragraph (3)(A)—
5 (A) by inserting ‘‘(D),’’ after ‘‘(A), (C),’’
6 in clause (i);
7 (B) by inserting ‘‘or’’ after the semicolon
8 at the end of clause (ii);
9 (C) by striking clause (iii); and
10 (D) by redesignating clause (iv) as clause
11 (iii).
