The Grammar-Translation Method

The grammar-translation method is focused on learning the rules of grammar and their application in translation passages from one language into another. The aim of this method is for learners to be able to read advanced texts in the foreign language. In this method are made long explanations of vocabulary and grammar. Also there is given little concern to listening and speaking. Teaching is done mostly in in the native language and not in the target language. The main characteristics of this method are: A lot of grammatical instruction is given in the mother tongue. Long explanations are given about how grammar works and the rules of grammar. Translation of texts from English into the learners mother tongue is a typical activity. It helps a lot reading and translation. Little or no attention is given to speaking and listening skills in foreign language. The teacher does not have to be able to speak English.
