Chapter 3

The z-Transform and its Applications

Part-1

The z-Transform
The z-transform of a discrete-time signal, x(n), is defined as

X ( z)

x ( n) z

where z is a complex number The z-transform will be denoted by X(z)= Z[x(n)]

Region of Convergence
The region of convergence (ROC) of X(z) is the set of values of z for which X(z) attains a finite value.

The Inverse z-Transform

In many cases, the z-transform X(z) of a signal is available and we must determine the signal sequence. The procedure for transforming the zdomain to the time domain is called the inverse z-transform.
