The way Eighner describes scavenging makes it sound like surviving on the streets is art. He has learned much as a scavenger, and Eighners story reflects how finding of objects is becoming something of an urban art. (254) Eighner shares with us the three principles of eating safely from dumpsters in his essay. He began scavenging by pulling pizzas out of the dumpster behind the pizza shop, he knew when the shop closed, and would go when the last employee left. He shares his experiences of the students dumpsters being rich because they throw out many good things; he keeps an eye on the academic calendar and knows the good times to get to the dumpsters to find items the students had thrown out, he illustrates on finding value in the valueless items to other Americans. Eighner says that, As I have mentioned, it is no accident that I scavenge from ones where good finds are common. (260) Furthermore Eighner proves that surviving on the streets is a skill and not for everyone, and that there is an art to dumpster diving. Word count 204 Eighner, Lars. "On Dumpster Diving."
