CC.9-10.SL.1 Comprehension and Collaboration: Initiate and participate effectively in a range of collaborative discussions (one-on-one, in groups, and teacher-led) with diverse partners on grades 910 topics, texts, and issues, building on others ideas and expressing their own clearly and persuasively Objectives: (SWBAT) Make connections and transition between the completed Survivor Unit and the upcoming Romeo and Juliet Unit Comprehend and apply the following poetic devices: Traditional Poem, Stanza, Lines, End Rhyme, and Syllabic Pattern Using end rhyme and syllabic pattern, apply the poetic devices and create an original How to Survive my Family poem Materials: Journal Entry #8 Freshman Literature Textbook PowerPoint presentation: Poetic Devices Rubric for poems Procedures: 1. Have Bell-ringer written on board: Take JE#8 and pair up with a partner and explain/read your response to the following question: How do you survive your family? Write a 3-4 sentence response to your partner's journal entry. Sign your name at the bottom. (Teacher walks around and takes attendance (checks JE in) and passes out the textbooks) 10 min 2. Discuss the following responses with the students and relate the activity back to the completed Survival Unit 5 min 3. Read Romeo and Juliet passage (Act 1 Scene 5 Lines 42-51) for context. Make note of any "poetic devices" that are seen (to tap into schema). 7 min 4. Discuss all poetic devices for the lesson: traditional poem, stanza, lines, end rhyme, and syllabic pattern. Relate back to Romeos lines. 10 min 5. Show students my How to Survive my Family journal/ original poem. 5 min 6. Assign students to create their own original poems using end rhyme and syllabic pattern. Discuss rubric. Poems are due 2/11 13 min
