What is chest pain?

- any pain, pressure, squeezing, choking, numbness or any other discomfort in the chest, neck, or upper abdomen. - associated with pain in the jaw, head, or arms. - it can last from less than a second to days or weeks, can occur frequently or rarely

POSSIBILITIES OF CHEST PAIN

HEART
Heart problems that can cause chest pain:1. Angina : Pain occurs because your heart is not getting enough blood and oxygen. Feel like tightness, heavy pressure, squeezing, or crushing pain. The pain may spread to the arm, shoulder, jaw, or back. 2. Aortic dissection (tearing of the aorta wall) : severe pain in the chest and upper back. 3. Heart attack 4. Inflammation or infection in the tissue around the heart (pericarditis) : pain in the center part of the chest

LUNGS
Lung problems that can cause chest pain: 1. A blood clot in the lung (pulmonary embolism) 2. Collapse of a small area of the lung (pneumothorax) 3. Inflammation of the lining around the lung (pleurisy) 4. Asthma 5. Pneumonia chest pain usually feels sharp, and often gets worse when you take a deep breath or cough.

GASTROINTESTINAL
Digestive system problems that can cause chest pain : 1. Esophageal spasms (abnormal contractions of the muscles in the tube that carries food from the mouth to the stomach) 2. Gallbladder (pain often gets worse after a meal, especially a fatty meal) 3. Heartburn or gastroesophageal reflux (GERD) 4. Pancreatitis (aching pain in the upper abdomen and back) 5. Stomach ulcer or gastritis (burning pain occurs if your stomach is empty and feels better when you eat food)

OTHERS
Other problems that can cause chest pain : 1. Anxiety and rapid breathing 2. Inflammation where the ribs join the breast bone or sternum (costochondritis) 3. Shingles (inflammation/infection of the nerve that causes sharp, tingling pain on one side that stretches from the chest to the back) 4. Strain or inflammation of the muscles and tendons between the ribs

CONCLUSION
Chest pain is one of the most common complaints that will bring a patient to the Emergency Department. Seeking immediate care may be lifesaving, and considerable public education should be taken to get patients to access medical care when chest pain strikes.
