CHRISTIAN ETHICS DEGREE OF GOOD 1. Instrumental Good (e.g.

money) - The value of money is not in the money itself, but in its instrument - Money is good in reference to another (to buy food, shelter) 2. Pleasant Good (What pleases you) - In the long run, what is pleasant might be harmful (e.g. eating ice cream everyday) - Too much of everything 3. Befitting Good (Intrinsic Good) - With reference to moral good (e.g. being honest, being friendly) - A good that is an end Moral Good is not subject to postponement Non-moral Good o aesthetic, intellectual o you can postpone A mistake that is a FAILURE OR A FAULT When is it in error/failure? o Something that is a failure of compliance o With reference to technical e.g. While driving, you lost control of the car and it went into the river e.g. When shooting the ball, you failed to shoot it. When is it a Fault? o When it enters into the moral sphere o When it is willful, voluntary o There is a sense of responsibility o There is malice/intention E.g. You killed someone, robbed someone Characteristics of Value 1. Values are bipolar o They came in pairs E.g. good and bad, belief and unbelief, beautiful and ugly 2. Heterogeneous 3. Transcends back (over and above) o E.g. Used to be a friend but now an enemy 4. Values also clamor for realization but not wholly realizable o At the end of the day, you complained about what you have chosen

The yearning to learn more, the very fact that you desire for more means a never ending yearning 5. Additional Characteristics o Moral value exists in human beings not in animals (animals are not capable of discernment) o Moral value is universal (e.g. respect for life)
