ABSTRACT:
The galvanic skin response (GSR) is one of the several electrodermal responses that refer to the changes in the electrical properties of human skin caused by an interaction between environmental events and the persons psychological state. Easily measured and relatively reliable GSR has been used as an index for providing measurable parameter to understand a persons internal state. The GSR reflects the sweat gland activity, which in turn corresponds to changes in the sympathetic nervous system. The most advanced layer of the cortex, unique to man, link to the thumb and forefinger, which when aroused causes a complex physiological response causing blood capillaries to enlarge, thus changes the skin resistance. GSR is effective in treating phobias, anxiety, excessive sweating, lie-detection test and, at times, stuttering since these emotions affect the skin conductivity. The Galvanic skin

response can be detected and monitored effectively and reliably by a device, known as the galvanic skin response meter or GSR meter. It is a biofeedback monitoring device designed to detect a person's mental state or change of state. The GSR meter has been widely used for experimental and leading-edge psychotherapy and personal development purposes. The

aim of this paper is to focus on the design and development a cost-effective and reliable GSR meter that utilizes simple electronics hardware. Despite a variety of sophisticated and hence, high-cost GSR meters already do exist, however, it is undeniable that for developing countries, like India, such a low-cost biofeedback monitoring device can easily find its place in heath care systems. Keywords- Galvanic skin response, skin conductance, biofeedback monitoring, GSR meter, lie detector.
