12A Test # 1 Date: February 2013 1 a) Distinguish between progressive waves and stationary waves by making reference to:

I. Energy transfer II. Frequency III. Amplitude of vibration of neighbouring particles [6] b) Two source of sound waves S1 and S2 are placed at a distance of 3.0 m apart at either end of a narrow pipe. Both sources are emitting waves of wavelength 1.2 m and of similar amplitude, which travel along the pipe.

S1

S2

Redraw the diagram above and show how the resultant wave will appear along the line S1S2 inside the pipe. [2] 2)

The detector is placed at a position where the intensity is at a minimum. When it is moved at a distance of 144 m, it passed through nine maxima and reaches the ninth minimum from the starting point. Calculate: a) the wavelength of the microwaves [1] b) the frequency of the microwave transmitter. [1] 3) A light platform is supported by two identical springs, each having a spring constant of 40 Nm-1 as shown below.

a) Calculate the weight the must be placed on the centre of the platform in order to produce a displacement pf 5.0 cm-1. [2] b) A weight remains on the platform and the platform is further depressed a further 1.5 cm and then released. I. What is the frequency of the oscillation of the platform? [2] II. Sketch a graph to show the variation with time of the displacement of the platform during the first second. Label the diagram correctly. [2] 4) The pistons of a 4-cylinder car engine, when idling, move approximately in simple harmonic motion with an amplitude of 50 mm at a frequency of 110 Hz. Calculate: I. the maximum speed of the pistons [1] II. the maximum acceleration of the pistons [2] 5) A diffraction grating with 250 lines per millimetre is placed in front of a monochromatic source of red light. A screen, placed 200 cm beyond the grating, has red light images measured at certain positions on a scale on the screen as shown below:

a) I. II.

Use the first order spectrum to deduce a value for the wavelength of the red light. [2] Make a check, using the second order spectrum, to show that your calculation is correct. [1]

b) How would the patterns obtained be different if blue light where used in place of red light? [1] c) What main problems would arise if the experiment were repeated with infra-red radiation? Suggest how this problem could be overcome. [2]
