Lesson plan for 4 weeks for a 4th grade class By: Sarah McMahon Standards:

Every week have students play the piece (2)

Week one: Play a recording of the piece and let students analyze the recording. Ask about what the students noticed and what they would do differently. Ask the students to sing with there own part first with the recording then with out. (1,6) Week two: Warm up- have the students make their own 4 bar melody, play in a call and response manor (3) Talk about Bach and his time period then tell how this piece relates to him, for homework ask students to bring in an interesting fact about Bach. Have the students read the score and have them figure out where they have the melody. (9, 5) Field trip to the philharmonic, after the concert have the students evaluate the performance. After a small evaluation have a Q and A with the orchestra (free) to ask them questions about the performance (7) give each students Week three: Have a professional dance company come in and dance to the piece as students play. (8) Week four: Play a recording or piano chords an ask students to write their own melody to the chords.
