YEREVAN(A.W.)The Armenian Revolutionary Federation(ARF) SupremeCouncilof Armeniaissuedastatementtoday(Feb.20)arguingthatthewillofthepeopleexpressedonFeb. 18mustnotbetrampledupon.TheARFnotedthatthebestpossibleelectionwaspromised,the worstwasdelivered.Weoughttorealizetheseriousnessofthesituationandlookforsolutions accordingly,statedthepartyinitsfirstofficialpostelectionstatement,thetranslationofwhich TheArmenianWeeklypresentsbelow,infull. *** ThecitizensofArmeniademonstratedonFeb.18thattheir patiencehaslimits,thattheydeserveamuchbetterlifeand leadership,andthatitsimpossibletokillthepeoplesaspirations forjusticeandfreedom. Thepeoplesoutragecameinresponsetothepolitical,social, economicandmoralenvironmentinthecountry.Itcamein responsetotheauthoritiesandtherankandfileoftheir representative,whowerebehavingasiftheyenjoythetrust andsupportoftheabsolutemajority.Itbecameevidentthat thatthemajorityofthepeopledoesnotacceptthecurrent regime. Ontopoftheirlimitlessadministrativeandfinancialresources, theauthoritiesemployedacoordinatedefforttorigthevote countingprocess.Thebestpossibleelectionwaspromised,the worstwasdelivered.Theresultsreassertedourconvictionthat theelectionwasfixed,andtheassessmentofinternational observerswastoopredictable.

Thepostelectionenvironmentandthedevelopmentsaheadimposeanimmenseresponsibilityand difficultdecisionsupontheauthorities,theleadingpresidentialcandidate,theoppositionforces, andtheactivesegmentofthepublic.ThewillofthepeopleexpressedonFeb.18mustnotbe trampledupon.TheARFstandstogetherwiththepeople,andsubscribestotheviewoffinding solutionstogether.Weoughttorealizetheseriousnessofthesituationandlookforawayout accordingly.Thisisadifficultyetinevitabletaskthatneedstobeundertakencollectively.Wehave adutytobeworthyofourpeople[strust].Onlyinthisway,onlywithaclearlydefinedpolitical agendacanwemovethecountryfromthecurrentstandstillanddeteriorationtothesteadypath ofdevelopment,andguaranteeasecureanddignifiedfutureforthecitizensofArmenia.
