Descartes and his idea Descartes was a 17th century French philosopher. He studied the reliability of perception, and came to the conclusion that our senses could not always be relied upon and needed to be subjected to skepticism. He referred to this as the mind-body problem. The idea was that Descartes tried to disconnect the faculty of the mind from the faculty of the body. This is why I think, therefore I am is significant. Because our senses are so unreliable, yet central, when concerning their interpretation of the world around us, we need to separate our mind from the world around us. 7.
