SPECTROGRAPHIC OIL ANALYSIS PROGRAMS (SOAP) VERSUS MAGNETIC DRAIN PLUG LIGHTS - SAFETY WARNING
Allison tests and experience with Model 250 Engines have shown the spectrographic oil anaylsls programs (SOAP) are not an adequate altemattve to the use of magnetic drain plugs. All Model 250 Engines are equipped with magnetic drain plugs to detect the metallic debris created by the impending failure of bearmgs, gears and other oil system lubricated parts. While SOAP can determine the amolmt of metal suspended in the oil. it cannot detect the metallic particles released by the spalling process. Reltance on SOAP as the only criterion for the condition of the oil system s lubricated components can result in the unnecessary removal of engines, as well as the continued operation of engines with impending failures. WARNING: OPERATORS MUST MAINTAIN THE ENGINE MAGNETIC DRAIN PLUGS AND INDICATING SYSTEM IN OPERATING ORDER AND COMPLY WITH THE AIRCRAFT FLIGHT MANUAL AND ENGINE OPERATION AND MAINTENANCE MANUAL INSTRUCTIONS WHEN AN INDICATION IS RElZEIVED. NEVER ALLOW AN ACCEPTABLE SOAP READING TO OVERRIDE MAGNETIC DRAIN PLUG INDICATIONS.

It is the operators responsibility to be completely familiar with this safety warning which advises of a specific operattng condition that, if not observed, can cause a serious engine malfunction or cause the engine to lose power or flameout in flight which can result in the loss of life, m]ury or damage to equlpmenl.
