GENERAL INTERVIEWS
As you may probably know, the Interview
you’ll encounter before landing a job is of
two parts; the general interview and job-
specific interview questions.
The General interview questions are what
the interviewers use to get to know your
kind of person, your view of life and test
if you are the kind of person needed for
such jobs .
Here are the most common of the general
interview questions asked and how best you
can attempt to answer them. Remember that
your mannerisms and dispositions as you
answer these questions matter as much as the
answers you give. Lets look at the
questions.

1) Tell Me About Yourself

In answering these questions refer to
your background but focus on how you
specifically meet the job requirements.
Don’t go on rambling about your biography
and all the things you did while growing up.
The interviewer doesn’t want to hear that.
Don’t repeat information that’s already
covered in your CV.

For example, if the job requires you to
work in a team, tell of projects you have
undertaken as a team member.
Another example, if he asks you of your
sales experience draw attention to your past
successes in sales instead of telling
whether you spent three years or not. The
years you spent there is an information
already in your CV.

2) What Are Your Strengths ?

Tailor your strengths to the Job-
relevant attributes that will contribute to
your success. For example you might answer,
“ To do well as an Athlete I had to stick to
rigorous training while still keeping myself
motivated and disciplined. I believe these
qualities of tenacity and discipline will
contribute greatly to my doing well as a
marketing officer for the organization”.
Always try as much as possible to back up
your strengths with facts as done above
where I linked athletic strengths and
qualities to the strengths needed for the
Job.

3) Why Should We Hire You?

Confidently refer to your skills and
experiences relevant to the job
requirements. Refer to your previous
successes and try to be straightforward.
Sample answer;

http://instantjobguide.co.cc
“I have the right combination of
skills and experience for the job. I also
bring the qualities of strong analytical
skill and problem solving ability as shown
by my introduction of a more effective
workflow system at BAC Corporation during my
internship”.

4) What’s Your Greatest Achievement So Far ?

Choose an achievement that is related
to the position you are seeking for and also
fairly recent. For example if the position
needs keen attention to details, strong
management skills etc reflect upon
achievements that demonstrated this skill.
Eg if attention to detail is a major plus
for the job your answer could be,
“ I was responsible for taking customer
orders by phone during my Internship at Rock
Corporation. I listened carefully, asked for
clarifications and always confirmed the
order to make sure I got everything correct.
At the end of my internship I was the only
one in my department who never made an error
on any order. Errors are often costly to
business and upsets customers so my
supervisor was very happy that I was able to
avoid any error.
He gave me a bonus. It was a satisfying
achievement.”

5) What Are your Goals For The Next Five Years ?

Though it is not easy to predict the
future , you’ve got to give them the
impression that come next five years you
hope to have contributed a lot to the
organization’s growth as well as improve
yourself and the values you’ll bring in to
the organization.

6) Why Did You Leave Your Last Place of Work ?

This question is a tricky one asked
to those with previous job experience . To
answer it comfortably do not castigate your
past employers. Doing that will put you in a
bad light. Instead let them know that you
enjoyed your stay with the last organization
you worked for but that you wanted more
challenges and opportunities to excel which
his organization provides you.

THE JOB SPECIFIC INTERVIEW
QUESTIONS
These are the questions asked to
determine whether you possess the required
knowledge , skills and experience for the
job.
Almost all the jobs being sought for
these days can be categorized into;
 Finance Jobs ( Accountant, Auditor,
Cashier, Economist, Insurance Sales Agents
etc)
 Education/Teaching Jobs ( Teaching
Assistants, Lecturers etc )
 Healthcare related Jobs ( Dentists,
Dieticians, Physicians, Surgeons etc )
 IT/Telecom Jobs ( Computer programmers,
Software Engineers, Info System Managers,
System Developers etc )
 Creative Jobs ( Designers, Website
Developer, Graphic Designers,
Writers/Editors)
 Management Jobs ( Engineering Manager,
Financial Analyst, Human Resources
Manager, Information System Manager,
Promotion Manager, Sales Manager, etc )
 Manufacturing Jobs ( Aircraft Technician,

 Professional Jobs ( Lawyers, Market
Researchers, Social Scientists,
Statisticians etc )
 Construction Jobs ( Electricians, Sheet
Metal Workers etc )
 Sales/Marketing Jobs ( Advertising
Manager, Sales Representatives, Marketing
Officers etc )
 Service Related Jobs ( Beauty Therapists,
Chefs, Flight Attendants, Private
Detectives etc)
So for each of these Job titles the
interview will focus on testing your
knowledge and skills for the job. While we
cannot give you interview questions and
answers for each of the above listed job
titles, we will give you a guide on how to
respond to whatever questions you might be
asked.

First you have to know the knowledge

and skills requirements for each job and be
prepared for any questions on them.
For instance for an accounting job,
it may be expected that you be able to
tackle questions on any of the following;

Accounting principles, auditing

principles & practice, analysis & reporting
of financial data, management accounts,

budgets, accounting software applications,
application of relevant laws & regulations.

A sample question may look like this;

“ Detail your experience in preparing
management accounts”

or

“ Explain the different accounting packages you have

used recently and tell us which best met your needs”

In each of the above questions they

want to know if you have good knowledge of
different aspects of accounting. So for your
specific job, list out the knowledge
requirements and make sure you are very much
acquainted with as many aspects as possible.
Getting a top job is worth all the hard work
and research so don’t shy away from it.
Become knowledgeable on almost all aspects
of the job requirements , you never can tell
where the interviewer may choose to lift his
questions from.

And don’t forget that the interviewer

would prefer confident, candid and relevant
answers. Don’t reply questions with
questions. If you don’t get any question
clear politely ask for clarification.

Finally there is no substitute to
preparation. Going into an interview without
preparing well is calling failure to come.

Prepare well using this Interview Guide.

First draw the knowledge requirements for
the job you are seeking for and as much as
possible draw up likely questions that could
be asked you and find answers to them. Good
preparation enhances your chances of winning
the job.
