History of Schoharie Co - (Southport LibrJ
by Jephtha R. Simons - publ,1845 Albany ^
by Munsall & Turner,printers
When Queen Anne sent over the German Palatines to Albany Co-
they were located at first near the Hudson on rocky ground and of
their own accord, sent out messengers to find more fertile ground
on which they could make subsistence. They came to the Valley
of the Mohawk and followed this to the West - into what is now
Schoharie and Fulton Counties, Among the earliest to settle
here - near Middleburg and Fultonham - were 6-
Conrad Weiser
Hartman Winteker
Johannes Hendrick Kneiskern
Ellas Garlock
Johannes George Smidt
William Fox-
These were Joined later on by Johannes Lawyer; Ellas Garloch left
the others and settled two miles lower down - near Jacob Vrooman's
place - on what is called Garlochdorf (dorf a small village).
Here were also Dieta- Mann - Sternbergh - Sidney - Bergh, Houck,
Snders - Kneiskern and Strubach families.
Christyan Bouck seems to have come from West Gamps after
the birth of his daughter Margareth - whose baptism was recorded there
Aug. 10- 1710.
In the two most southern villages were these families:
Bouck Schoolcraft Brown
Keyser Krysler Settle
Rickard Casselman Merckley
Rightmyer f/eukirk
Borst Earhart
These were among the earliest settlers in Schoharie section -
which In 1711had from five to seven hundred souls. Most of these
had come from the West Camps group of Palatinates - where their names
may be found in the register of the minister who came to New York
Colony with his flock on two separate voyages - and listed these
in marriage and baptismal records - in a manner which evokes the
1
gratitude of all genealogical searchers. I refer to the Rev.
Joshua Kocherthal who came with the first group of Palatines
in 1708 - returned 1709 - and came with the second group in 1700
of ten families - 41 people. He died in 1719 ^'°
His Journal or Register - was found in ^yo^M-Pa.
To preserve continuity - in these Bouck records we will not digress
further than to say that some of these may be found in the end
of this volume with charts of Allied Families.
Noted among the above settlers - tradition records that four
children were barn in Schoharie settlements the first week:
Catherine Mattice Wilhelmus Bouck _.
Elizabeth Lawyer Johannes Earhart
For fifty years these settlers lived in peace and comparative
isolation - clearing their farms from the woodlands- planting
orchards, taking their grain to Albany gristmills - then establish-
ing their own mills. Their prosperity drew others from nearby
and foreign shores but this section may be said to have preserved
its own identity - their children inter-marrying among the above
groups - and the grand children being kin. to all the others -
with names duplicated to an amazing degree.
By the time of the Revolution names (which may originally have been
French in origin before their forbears had had to flee from France
into the German Palatinate or Alsace- and had come from thence
via England to the N.Y. Colony) had by this time become twisted
by various spellings in church or land records so as to be almost
unrecognizable-neverthe less by the fortunate preservation of
Bibles, chiefly, (for these were devout Lutherans who loved their
Bibles) many family records have been preserved.
That a sense of gratitude and loyalty to the British crown should
have persisted to a second and third generation - is not strange -
especially when one considers the great influence exerted in this
section by Sir W<JJLJ-*^~- Johnson up to the time of his death in
1773 (see Annals of Tryon Co. etc) Christyan Bouck - the original
settler - was not the only one whose family was divided then - who
lost sight of each other and their families remain ignorant to this
day - of any kinship. Feeling ran too high for many years after
l0
the Revolution for reconciliations. Communication ceased - This
compiler owes a debt of gratitude to the office of the Archives
of Canada - in Ottawa (M. Gustave Lanctot) for the first clue to
the name of John Ault's wife:- Margaret Bouck - the daughter of
Frederick Bouck - and the name whereof we have this volume -(as
an excursus)from the Ault records - at John's generation.
1752:
Whereas Johannes Becker Jr. and Johannes Shafer Jr. and
Hendriok Shafer Jr. and Jacobus Shafer Jr. having prayed that
they may purchase 6000 acres of land Gov. G. Clinton
agrees — ) - and in December 1^52 — 15,000 acres were conveyed
to them in (a place called ) New Dorlach - which is now in the
part called Seward - which was in Albany County - later part of
Otsego Co. and when that was divided - became part of Schoharie
County -
