Special Olympics South Africa Annual Report 2012

Chairmans Message
Friends, In Special Olympics, each year seems to bring with it a new reason to celebrate, another reason to be proud. 2012 was filled with many of those such moments. Hosting the inaugural Special Olympics Africa Unity Cup and being able to share the power of inclusion with so many fellow athletes and Unified partners from across the region was certainly one of the most memorable. As was our National Figure Skating Championships, an event that had long been earned and deserved by the coaches involved and one that has made a dream come true for 4 young figure skaters. Individual displays of excellence have left us bursting with pride including the performance by Craig Groenewald to win the ID section of the Midmar Mile and then go on to represent SOSA in San Francisco where he won the open wetsuit division of the RCP Tiburon Mile. So too is the performance by golfer Tom Lugg whose handicap was cut to scratch at the end of 2012, just weeks before qualifying to play in the Sanlam SA Amateur Championships and receiving a congratulatory call from Gary Player. And let us not forget the two athletes who achieved 70+% in obtaining their SAFA Level 1 Referee qualification this year and have taken the Athlete Leadership Program to new heights. These remarkable feats are mirrored across South Africa by over 34,000 athletes who continue to train, compete, lead and excel due to the commitment and support from their coaches, families and selfless volunteers. At the Opening Ceremony of the Unity Cup, Special Olympics Chairman Dr Timothy Shriver challenged all participants, volunteers and spectators to join the Dignity Revolution. The flame of this revolution was ignited in Phokeng and it is a torch which we will carry forward into 2013 and beyond. The impact of this revolution is felt by

every Young Athlete who today experiences the joy of play because of the Young Athletes Program and by every athlete who is healthier today, than yesterday because of our Healthy Athletes Program and emerging Healthy Communities Project. There is probably no better example of our Dignity Revolution coming to life than the story of a mother who attended the Family Health Forum during the Unity Cup. The quiet parent softly wept as family members shared their stories of shame and blame, raising their child with an intellectual disability in isolation in their communities. After the tea break she was asked if she would like to share her story and she declined but added, I was going to, but when I listened to the other mothers sharing their stories I heard my own story and I felt my own pain and I realized that I am not alone. I feel healed now and I can continue. It remains a privilege to be a part of an organization which can heal and bring dignity to so many marginalise individuals in such an unassuming manner. 2013 brings with it new opportunities and new challenges: 4 Figure Skaters and 13 Floor hockey players have already returned from the 2013 Special Olympics World Winter Games adorned with medals and our Global Youth Summit team touched down all fired up to drive the Dignity Revolution amongst our learners and students. The prospect of reaching more athletes, developing new youth clubs, forming partnerships with additional universities and health NGO's, sharing our successes with new sponsors and bringing, above all, dignity to our athletes and their families is exciting. I implore you to spend a few minutes reliving the achievements included in this Annual Report and then recommit yourself to joining SOSA and bringing the Dignity Revolution to every South African in 2013.

Special Olympics South Africa Annual Report 2012

Having established a footprint throughout South Africa, Special Olympics South Africa continues to expand at a local Program level, offering consistent and varied opportunities for our athletes. 2012 saw SOSA maintain its place as the largest Program within the Africa Region and the Program offering the largest number and most diverse competition opportunities. These include: Participation in the Midmar Mile, with SOSA boasting participation from 7 provinces, winners in both male and female intellectual disability categories and recognition as the largest Open Water Swimming Program within the Special Olympic movement. In preparation for the advancement of a delegation to participate in the 2013 Special Olympics World Winter Games, 8 provinces held Provincial Floor Hockey Competitions for over 50 teams and 30 figure skaters participated in the first ever National Figure Skating Championships. A further first for South Africa in 2012 was the staging of a Special Olympics Equestrian competition alongside Unified bocce and Unified volleyball activities.

It was tough and windy at the start, but I kept on swimming.

Youth
Youth engaged in Special Olympics are quickly becoming very vocal and proactive agents of change. Youth led activities in Soweto, Gauteng included an awareness activity in which learners at a mainstream high school were introduced to Special Olympics athletes and an open dialogue was facilitated in which both abled and disabled could talk about the stereotypes they hold. This activity pre-empted a peaceful march later in the year in which athletes, coaches and youth paraded through the streets of Soweto with placards demanding equality and respect for those with disabilities. This sentiment was echoed in the Royal Bafokeng Nation where Youth Clubs were formed by Peace Corps Response volunteer Meisha Robinson in 3 high schools. The learners engaged in various activities including volunteering at events and a 'Unified painting' experience at Kutlwanong Special School on Mandela Day. The clubs formed a strong foundation of understanding inclusion and advocating for acceptance, before having the learners participate in the first ever Youth Summit on African soil. From this strong group of young leaders emerged SOSA's Global Youth Activation Summit participants who will undoubtedly carry the Summit's enthusiasm and mass of great ideas to the stage in PyeongChang, Korea.

Through the introduction of Special Olympics, there is no more discrimination. All kinds of people play soccer together. If this kind of mentality can be cascaded down, everything will be alright in our country. - Youth Summit Participant

It was hard, but being here has healed me. Because my son has an intellectual disability, I felt like God punished me. But he does things for a purpose and I can now stop asking the question 'Why me?'

Families & Young Athletes

SOSA registered 1198 new family members during 2012 and held various Family Engagement activities including Family Health Forums in 3 provinces, information desks at the National Games and at Healthy Athletes Screenings, a Forum Discussion on Women's Day for over 100 mothers and a comprehensive Family Forum during the Africa Unity Cup which drew in family members from 4 countries. The Young Athlete Program was significantly expanded in the North West Province and through the support of the Lottery, Kim Samuel Johnson and Mattel, additional equipment sets have been purchased and distributed and Young Athlete activities are thriving in 8 provinces. A demonstration of the Young Athletes Program was held for leaders of African Programs during the Africa Leadership Meeting as well as during the Unity Cup where Mmemegolo Semane, Queen Mother of the Royal Bafokeng, joined in the cheers for these young stars.

He should participate in sports, because raising him alone is difficult.

Healthy Athletes
Special Olympics South Africa continues to be the only organization providing specialized screening tailored for individuals with ID in South Africa. In 2012, three screenings were held in 3 different provinces reaching 516 athletes and providing 1,724 individual screenings in 6 disciplines as well as an additional 132 medical clearance examinations to new athletes. Family Health Forums were initiated during this term and implemented alongside the screenings in some instances. This gave family members an opportunity to receive short talks from Clinical Directors about caring for their child's health whilst also receiving public health information on relevant subjects such as handwashing and hygiene. Four of SOSA's Clinical Directors were selected and trained to become Regional Clinical Advisors capable of training new Clinical Directors. These individuals, Dr Tharcisse Ngambe (MedFest), Mrs Nomonde Mtshazo (Healthy Hearing), Mrs Mpogeng Kgoedi (FUNfitness) and Ms Nomzamo Duma (Fit Feet) were selected both for their clinical expertise and obvious commitment to the Special Olympics movement over the past 8 years. Towards the end of 2012, South Africa was announced as one of only two African countries selected to expand the Healthy Athletes program to develop a level of care and / or intervention beyond the screenings. This Healthy Communities project is a 3 year project funded through a grant from the Golisano Foundation and announced at the Clinton Global Initiative. In South Africa it is expected that this project will establish new avenues of screening & education (including HIV/ AIDS) and follow up care and treatment for athletes post screenings through partnerships; improve the training of health care workers through engaging with universities and their undergraduate students; and to engage in research which will determine the barriers to health care experienced by Special Olympics and then actively work to resolve these.

Highlights
Two time World Summer Games gold medalist Tom Lugg achieved a new personal best by becoming the first Special Olympics golfer to play off a scratch handicap in 2012 and to qualify to play in the 2013 South African Amateur Championships. SOSA held the first Special Olympics South Africa Figure Skating Championships in June 2012, featuring 30 skaters from KwaZulu Natal and Gauteng. The athletes excelled with 4 skaters advancing in to the South Africa delegation participating in the 2013 Special Olympics World Winter Games. The South African Figure Skating Federation were so impressed with the performances at the Champs that they have taken SOSA on board as their development partner. Thirteen time Midmar Mile winner of the Intellectually Disabled category, Craig Groenewald received an invitation to participate in the RCP Tiburon Mile Open Water Swim, in San Francisco, USA by a Special Olympics supporter. Craig's exclusion from the Paralympics Games allowed him to take up this opportunity where he exceeded all expectations by winning the wetsuit division for open swimmers. Special Olympics South Africa was selected as one of only a handful of Programs to pilot the global partnership with the US Peace Corps. The very successful relationship resulted in Peace Corps Response volunteer Meisha Robinson being deployed to Phokeng, North West where she fostered a strong relationship with the Royal Bafokeng Nation, developed youth clubs and played an integral role to the success of the Africa Unity Cup including organizing a first ever Regional Youth Summit. South Africa and Panama were selected as the 2 most successful pilot programs of the partnership and participated in the 1 year partnership celebration via webex. The US Peace Corps have committed to support the partnership and a volunteer has been selected for deployment to SOSA for 2013-2014. An invitation was extended to 4 athletes and 1 coach from South Africa by the Mayor of San Juan, Puerto Rico to attend the Special Olympics World Aquatics event. Gold medalists from the 2010 National Games who had not participated in the 2011

SOWSG were selected to take part in this exciting event and they were joined by SOSA swimmer Craig Groenewald en route back from San Francisco. All of the swimmers excelled and returned with 10 medals between them six gold, one silver and three bronze. Special Olympics parent and supporter Rochelle Badenhorst once again arranged a fantastic fundraising golf day and auction. The event had a full field of 72 players with many individuals and companies commenting on the fantastic organization of the event, fabulous prizes and the stunning venue at the Serengeti Golf Estate. Coca-cola sponsored the dinner and SOSA was fortunate to have their new CEO present to say a few words at the dinner along with our SOSA Chairman. Eunice Kennedy Shriver Day was celebrated throughout September and across South Africa with many tribute events being held to honour her legacy including Unified Sports events in four provinces. An exclusive dinner was also held during the Unity Cup to acknowledge the contribution of Mrs Shriver and the sentiments shared by Mmemegolo Semane of the Royal Bafokeng Nation and Chairman and CEO Timothy Shriver served to inspire those in attendance to carry her legacy forward. Longstanding partners, the PGA of South Africa and Royal Johannesburg Golf Club again put on a fantastic event for 160 athletes and Unified golf partners. This year the event was attended by four athletes from neighbouring Special Olympics Zimbabwe and the footage was broadcast on Supersport.

We're so proud of our association and the contribution made by our Peace Corps Response Volunteer Meisha Robinson. I was personally gratified to participate and witness the spirit and joy of the participants. Thank you for making Meisha's collaboration possible and for enabling the participation of our other Volunteers.
John Jacoby, Director of Peace Corps South Africa

Unity Cup
The staging of the inaugural Special Olympics Africa Unity Cup was without exception the highlight on the SOSA 2012 calendar. The four day long event was hosted by Royal Bafokeng Sports and supported by Royal Bafokeng Holdings, Supersport, Sport and Recreation SA, Lions Clubs International and Kim Samuel Johnson. The event featured teams from 10 African Programs and featured Unified 7-a-side football with the top three teams qualifying for the Special Olympics Unified Cup, Rio 2013. Teams were divided in to two groups with the results determining which teams would advance in to the final division, and which would play off in the plate division. The competition was exceptionally tight as all countries had fielded their strongest teams in the hope of qualifying for the prestigious Unified Cup. After 3 days of competition, the South African ladies team were awarded the bronze medal whilst the boys team managed to beat Tanzania in the final to lift the trophy in the Royal Bafokeng Stadium!
