Classifica tion Nonsteroidal antiinflammato ry drug

Mechanism of Action Mefenamic acid has analgesic, antiinflammatory and antipyretic properties. It inhibits the synthesis of prostaglandins .

Dosage, Route Preparation Adult dose for pain: 500 mg orally followed by 250 mg every 6 hours as needed, not to exceed 7 days Dysmenorrhea: 500 mg followed by 250 mg every 6 hours starting with onset of menses Pediatric dose: 14 to 18 years: 500 mg orally followed by 250 mg every 6 hours as needed

Indications Relief of pain including muscular, rheumatic, traumatic, dental, post-op and postpartum pain, headache, migraine, fever, dysmenorrhea

Contraind ications: Pregnancy & lactation, hypersensi tivity, active ulceration or chronic inflammati on of either upper or lower GIT, blood disorders, poor platelet function, kidney or liver impairmen t, children < 14 yrs

Adverse Reactions CNS: Headache, Drowsiness, dizziness, nervousness

Nursing Responsibiliti es Ensure pt. safety Advice pt. not to participate in activities that requires mental alertness Administer with full stomach Advise pt to minimize GI upset by eating small, frequent servings of food and drinking plenty of fluids

GI: Dyspepsia, upper gastrointestinal discomfort, gastrointestinal bleeding.

Skin: rash

Instruct pt. to immediately report s/sx of hypersensitivity reactions
