Mechanism of Action Replenishes depleted stores of iron in bone marrow

Dosage, Route Preparation -Iron Deficiency Anemia: 325 mg orally once a day Maintenance: 325 mg 3x a day -Usual adult dose for vitamin supplementation during lactation; -Usual adult dose for vitamin supplementation : 325 mg orally once a day

Indications To prevent and treat iron deficiency anemia

Contraindications: Contraindicated in clients with hemolytic anemia, Peptic ulcer and Ulcerative colitis

Adverse Reactions CNS: seizures, dizziness, headache

Nursing Responsibilities Monitor for seizures when giving high doses. Ensure pt. safety Watch for s/sx of iron overload, including decreased activity, and GI or respiratory tract bleeding Monitor for acute exacerbation of joint pain and swelling. >Provide appropriate comfort measures. Advice to use plastic straw when taking Fe04

Hematologic: hemosiderosis

Musculoskeletal: joint pain. Myalgia

Usual Pediatric dose for IDA -Premature neonates: 2-4 mg iron/kg/day -Infants and children Prophylaxis: 1-2 mg iron/kg/day

CV: thrombophlebitis

Other: abnormal or metallic taste, tooth discoloration
