His father Ali Boy was the court singer of Patiala and the Maharaja gave him the title of General in appreciation of his musical talents. At the age of seven, Bade Ghulam Ali Khans Uncle Kale Khan Saheb, became his guru and the official Ganda ceremony was performed. Thus the boy singers big moment came when hewas about twelve when he sang in the Durbar of The Prince of Wales in Lahore. Instant Official recoginition paved the way for further success.

Bade Ghulam is blessed with a melodious voice and he uses it with ability to give the utmost satisfaction to his listeners. His voice is used to great advantage in the singing of Thumris, a difficult art which requires perfect voice control. His brother, the late Barket Ali Khan, was also an exponent of this particular style and had same gifts. His other brother, the late Mubarak Ali Khan was also well known singer in his time. But many think Bade Ghulam Ali Khan has excelled his brothers. Bade Ghulam Ali Khan has sung for a few Indian films, notable among them are Baiju Bawra and Mughel-e-Azam in which his singing was used for the character of Tensen. Even at the age of 65, he used to get up at dawn to sing his voice resounding in the early morning stillness of his big flat on Bombays Malabar Hill. When he had a paralytic attack in 1960, his admirers feared that he might not be able to sing again. But he surprised everyone by singing some tunes on his third day in the hospital. It was his strong will and determination which made him fit and able to sing again. Inspite of a physical handicap. 1 6 .
