ARGENTINA
Argentina underwent a severe and extended recession between 1999 and 2002 during which the economy shrank by 20%. This initially resulted in deflation which was replaced by inflation of 25% in 2002, unemployment soared and the Peso lost 70% of its value. In 2000, cinema admissions in Argentina were 33.6 million, almost identical to those seen in 2008. Indeed, with the exception of the remarkable results seen in 2004 and to a lesser extent 2005, admissions in Argentina have been on a plateau of around 33 million admissions during the whole of the current decade. Screen numbers peaked in 2004 alongside admissions; they have since fallen with around a quarter of screens closing. In July 2009, a nationwide outbreak of the H1N1 flu virus caused havoc across Argentina; schools and universities were closed and shopping malls barred young people, sapping attendance to the multiplexes within. Admissions were reported to have fallen by as much as 34% and the release dates of several films including Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince were delayed.
