A German scientific and exploratory expedition to Antarctica in 1938-1939 later became the basis of some wild tales of secret bases where Nazi UFOs were built. You might also find connections to the 'Hollow Earth' - the Nazi discovery of the entrance.
I became curious about the origins of these stories, wanted to see what, if any, actual facts there are as a basis. In addition to researching the 1938-1939 expedition, I trolled newspapers from the early 1940s for the Admiral Byrd connection. To accompany a map I uploaded of the expedition's Neu Schabenland (the German land claim in Antarctica), I've uploaded scans of real newspaper articles (from Web archives) relating Admiral Byrd's 'reported' wartime discovery of a Nazi base in Antarctica - as told by some expedition members. Again, later wild tales point to these accounts, and newspaper articles, as evidence of the establishment of one or more Nazi bases that survived and later became Nazi havens of super science. As you read the articles you'll see what they're actually saying. You'll also find that the news is contradictory, the reporters relying of hearsay with no official press release by Byrd or hard evidence to support what's being reported.
I think you'll find some of the other articles of the day interesting as well. See p. 5 of the paper (the far right page): 'Iraq Support Against Nazis in Balance'.
