Pressure Test Requirements Charts

for ANSI B16.34, API 6D, API 598, and MSS SP-61
Please remember that these charts can not replace review of the actual specifications as some interpretations may differ from ours and these charts do not include procedures. PVF-Shop does not maintain these specifications, and takes no responsibility for their use. There are four types of pressure tests outlined and defined in MSS SP-61, ANSI B16.34, API 598, and/or API 6D.

SHELL
This test is made by applying 1.5 times the maximum allowed pressure at 100 degrees F rounded off to the next highest 25 psi increment inside the assembled valve with the valve ends closed, the valve partially open, and the packing gland tight. No leakage is allowed through the pressure boundary walls. MSS SP-61 and ANSI B16.34 allow stem seal leakage as long as the stem seal is capable of retaining pressure at maximum allowed pressure at 100 degrees F, API 598 calls for zero stem seal leakage at full test pressure, and API 6D does not address the issue.

HIGH PRESSURE CLOSURE

This test is made by applying 1.1 times the maximum allowed pressure at 100 degrees F rounded off to the next highest 25 psi increment to the seat closure member. There are a variety of procedures for testing this seat closure integrity. Each specification has qualifications for allowable leakage. (6D valves are zero leakage) Allowable leakage qualifications need to take valve type, size, design, and seating material into consideration.

LOW PRESSURE CLOSURE

This test is made by applying (at least 80 psi per ANSI B16.34 and MSS SP-61) or (60 to 100 psi per API 598) air or inert gas to the seat closure member. API 6D does not specify procedures for this test, but does offer it as an optional test in it's tables at 80 psi + 10 psi.

BACKSEAT
This test is made, on valves that have this feature, with the backseat engaged and the packing gland loose at either high or low pressure. MSS SP-61 and ANSI B16.34 do not refer to this test. Both API 598 and API 6D make the disclaimer that successful completion of this test shall not be construed as a recommendation that the valve stuffing box may be repacked or packing may be replaced while the valve is pressurized.

a: MSS SP-61 allows a low pressure closure test on valves under ANSI class 600# 12" NPS and smaller and on all ANSI class valves 4" NPS and smaller. ANSI B16.34 allows a low pressure closure test on valves under ANSI class 600# 8" NPS and smaller and on all ANSI class valves 4" NPS and smaller. b: For lubricated plug valves the high pressure closure test is required and the low pressure closure test is optional per API 598. c: For metal seated ball and butterfly valves, the low pressure closure test is required and the high pressure closure test is optional per API 598. d: The high pressure closure test of resilient seated valves may degrade subsequent performance in low pressure service.
