ELECTRIC FIELD
DEFINITION
An electric field is a region in which an electric force will act on a charge that is placed in the region.
A charge or an electric potential difference across two conductors can produce an electric field.Hence an electric field exists in the space surrounding the charge.

DEFINITION
The electric force per unit charge experienced by a charge placed at the point.
E= F/q
3/10/13
F = q.E
Unit of E is N C -1 or volt/metre ( V m-1) E is vector quantity.Its direction same as: (a) the direction of the electric field
(b) the direction of electronic force F acting on a positive charge q in the electric field.
3/10/13
E = (1/q) F
QUESTION
CHARGE ( C) ELECTRIC DIRECTION ELECTRIC FORCE (N) OF FORCE FIELD STRENGHT (Kn C -1) 20 10 30 20

(a) + 10 (b) -500 (c) (d) To the right To the left To the left
150 100
ANSWER!
(a) F= q E = (10 C)(20kN C-1) = 0.20 N Since the charge is positive, the direction of F follows the direction of the field.F points to the left. (b) E = F/q = 10/500x 10-6 = 20kN C-1
3/10/13
(c) |q| = F/E = 30/150 x 10 = 200 C Since the direction of F is opposite to that of E,q is negative. (d) |q| = F/E = 20 /100 x 10 = 200 C Since the direction of F is the same as that of E, q is positive.

Similarities
(a) The field strength of each kind of field obeys the inverse square law. (b) Both kinds of fields are radial if the charge is at points charge and the mass is a point mass (c) The force associated with each kind of field is a conservative force. Because of this kind of field is associated with a potential at 3/10/13 a point in the filed.
