Chinese Number Gestures

Introduction

Every culture has their own unique nonverbal communication. The area I want to reference is number gestures. More specifically, the Chinese number gestures. I decided to research this area when I seen how unique the Chinese number gestures are compared to ours.

Number Zero

Number 1

Number 2

Number 3

Number 4

Number 5

Number 6

Number 7

Number 7 may be interpreted as 5 in malaysia or Singapore.

Number 8

This gesture means 7 in regions such as Guangdong and Hong Kong.

Number 9

Number 10

10 can be done with a closed fist or crossed index fingers.

Conclusion

To reiterate, there are many forms of nonverbal communication. Number gestures are just one of many forms. The Chinese number gestures are unique in the fact that they count from zero to ten on one hand. Compared to our culture, who counts from zero to ten on both hands typically.
