Lesson Plan Ashley Meadows March 27, 2012 Learning Goal: Lesson Includes: __x_ Childrens Literature ____

Relating Math and Daily Life Materials Needed: I. II. Introduction: I will tell the student that we are going to read a story and work on math while reading. I will tell the student we will play games afterwards. Lesson Development: a. Activity 1: To start off our tutoring session, I will be reading The Stray Dog by Marc Simont. While reading the story, I will use the pictures to ask the student multiplication questions. For example, There are 5 dogs on this page and each dog has 4 paws. How many paws are on this page? I also could reverse questions to make them into division problems, such as, There are 50 fingers on this page and each person has 10 fingers, how many people are there? This should take about 15 minutes. b. Activity 2: Next, we will play a few rounds of Multiplication Bingo. I will make a 5 x 5 square game board and have her place any numbers between 2 and 36. I will shuffle flashcards and use those to randomly pick what problem to use. I will create a story for her instead of just saying the problem. If the student seems to be doing really well with multiplication facts, I will switch it up and ask division questions. If the solution to the problem is on her sheet, the student will be able to mark it off. We will play this for about 20 minutes. c. Activity 3: If there is still time, we will model problems with the Unifix cubes. I will set up the cubes in groups and ask her to use multiplication to solve how many cubes there are. We will do a few different problems until the student feels comfortable. Once they are comfortable, I will combine however many cubes and ask them to separate the cubes into groups. We will do this for the remainder of the time.
