February 22, 2013 Ms. Leslie Batten Lester B. Pearson School Board 1925 Brookdale Ave. Dorval, Quebec H9P 2Y7 Dear Ms. Batten, I am interested in applying for a position teaching science at the secondary school level and I would like to be considered for an interview during the interview evening on March 21, 2013. I learned of this opportunity through an advertisement of the interview evening as posted on the Lester B. Pearson School Board website. With my academic background in science coupled with my student teaching experience in a grade 10 and 11 science classroom, I am confident that I will be a good fit in the school community. I come to the classroom with a unique background that allows me a different perspective and a measure of adaptability. The petroleum shipping industry places heavy emphasis on the safety of all personnel as well as on environmental protection. I have embraced this safety attitude and adapted it to my teaching practices. I believe that school should be a positive experience for all students. As a part of fostering a positive and safe environment, I believe in using a variety of assessment methods, evaluating different areas of students strengths in order to give every student as many chances for success as possible. I also encourage active student discussion and participation through group work, peer assessment and classroom discussions. During my student teaching experience I gave a lesson on stem cells which evolved into a class discussion about some of the controversy surrounding stem cell research. These types of discussions relate the high school science classroom to real world applications, allowing me to stoke the fires of curiosity in my students and ultimately share with them some of what makes me so passionate about science. Through building a positive student-centered learning environment, I believe that I will find success within your school board. I welcome the opportunity to discuss with you in person my ideas and qualifications. If you have any questions or would like to arrange an interview with me, I may be reached at (514) 419-7754 or robyn.porterfield@gmail.com. Thank you for your consideration. Sincerely,

Robyn Porterfield
