DeeAnn Wotring School Library Media Specialist Professional Development Plan

Outlined below is my personal development plan for the next five years. This plan concentrates on involvement within librarianship through professional organizational involvement, continued education, and career development in a buildinglevel program by focusing on learning and teaching, informational access, and program administration ( (American Association of School Librarians (AASL), 1998, p. ix). As I begin my career as a school librarian, I will use this plan to assist in obtaining the goals I have set that I believe will lead me toward becoming an exemplary school librarian. The goals reflected within the five year professional development plan are:

1. To attain then develop in a full time career as a school librarian/media specialist in the local area 2. To increase my professional growth through active involvement in school librarianship organizations 3. To further my knowledge and share that knowledge with others in the profession 4. To improve and advance my technology skills in keeping up-to-date in the ever evolving technological industry

2012-2013

PROFESSIONAL INVOLVEMENT Join American Library Association (ALA) Join ALAs American Association of School Librarians (AASL) Join North Carolina School Library Media Association (NCSLMA) Attend at least one professional conference

CONTINUING EDUCATION Complete Masters in Library and Information Studies degree by May, 2013 Continue subscription to School Library Journal, reading articles and book reviews to stay current on issues, trends, and materials of relevance to school libraries

CAREER DEVELOPMENT Begin job as a long-term substitute for a media assistant for as long as needed or until end of school year Upon graduation, apply for and receive school library licensure By summer, begin applying for full-time school library building-level position

CAREER DEVELOPMENT Get to know the school in which I have begun a building-level school library program by performing a demographic analysis and becoming familiar with teachers and curriculum Perform a thorough inventory of the collection in order to become familiar with the collection and then analyze the collection in order to create a collection development plan Perform a needs assessment then begin creating curriculum maps for essential content areas as determined by evaluative tools utilized (needs assessments, collection analysis, and demographic analysis) Work with school administration to set yearly Individual Growth Plan (IGP) goals

Establish at least one teacher per grade level to collaborate with during the year

Work with and revise as needed the collection development plan in order to weed and grow the collection for the best use of its patrons Assess the library facility and make recommendations for revisions to administration for changes to ensure accessibility for all users and best use of library space Form a Battle of the Books (BOB) team of interested students Work with school administration to set yearly Individual Growth Plan (IGP) goals

CAREER DEVELOPMENT Request to host a library information workshop during pre-school-start activities to familiarize returning as well as new faculty to the librarys policies, uses, and services to teachers and students Prepare an interactive information kiosk in Power Point for students and parents that explores how the library can be used to meet students personal, educational, and recreational information needs accessible on the librarys website Establish and/or maintain at least one teacher per grade level to collaborate with during the year Work with and revise as needed the collection development plan in order to weed and grow the collection for the best use of its patrons Continue to coach a Battle of the Books (BOB) team of interested students and begin incorporating the BOB program into a school wide literacy program Work with school administration to set yearly Individual Growth Plan (IGP) goals Look for ways to volunteer for or join the schools leadership team Invite parents into the school library as part of developing an advocacy plan

CAREER DEVELOPMENT Offer to host workshops for staff that instruct them in information literacy, usage of various technologies and/or applications throughout the school year Meet with teachers before school starts to discuss areas in which the collection can be used or improved to match curricular needs Prepare and post various instructional tools (videos, written step-by-step instructions, etc.) for teachers and students highlighting technology and informational literacy on the school librarys website (i.e. copyright laws, plagiarism, proper citation, how to use WordPress)

Continue to pursue relationships and establish collaborations with teachers Work with and revise as needed the collection development plan in order to weed and grow the collection for the best use of its patrons Continue to coach a Battle of the Books (BOB) team of interested students and creating a school-wide literacy program Work with school administration to set yearly Individual Growth Plan (IGP) goals Continue to look for ways to volunteer for or join the schools leadership team Re-evaluate overall building-level program to ensure policies, procedures, and practices meet patrons needs (re-examine collection development plan, advocacy plan, possibly perform needs assessment). Make adjustments as needed. Offer to begin mentoring another new school librarian
