Why GIS Role in Distribution

Success Stories/ GIS enabled utilities

GIS
GIS is a technology that manages, analyses and

disseminates geographical knowlwdge.

Geographical Information System popularly known as

Geo Spatial Information System is a computer system capable of

Capturing Storing Analyzing Displaying

geographical referenced information i.e. data identified according to location.

WHY GIS / Significance

GIS makes it possible to see relationships, patterns or

trends that were not possible with traditional charts, graphs & spreadsheets.
Every element in the system whether a transformer, a

breaker, a sub-station or a customer can be mapped to develop an accurate network map.

GIS helps to see how things behave by maping where &

how things move over a period of time, by mapping the conditions before and after an action/event providing trend analysis.

Working of GIS
Data Capture

- Putting the information in to the system.

- This involves identifying the objects on the map, their absolute location on the Earths surface (latitude & longitude) and their spatial relationship.
- In case of information not available in digital form, Maps are digitized to collect the coordinates of feature.

Data Integration
GIS makes it possible to link /integrate the data from

different resources.
