Looking at onion cells

Apparatus and Materials:


Microscope, glass slide, cover slip, tissue paper, iodine solution, onion, blade, forceps, water, needle and dropper

Procedure:
1. Cut a small section from the scale leaf of an onion.

2. Use a pair of forceps to pull out the inner epidermal layer from the scale leaf.

3. Spread out the inner epidermal layer carefully on a glass slide and add a drop of iodine solution to it.

4. Gently lower the cover slip on top of the epidermal layer using a needle. Remove excess iodine solution with a piece of tissue paper.

5. Look at the slide using a light microscope. Use the low power objective lens. 6. Look at the structures of the cells with the high power objective lens. Draw and label the structures.
