Closing Case

Chapter 10

Closing Case

S Common in the workforce for organizations to conduct

performance appraisals for everyone on a routine schedule

S Traditionally, the schedule of reviews has fallen either

once a year or during a period of time after a new candidate has been hired
S This system has both advantages and disadvantages to

the new candidates learning how to properly perform their required responsibilities

Closing Case

S Advantage - allowed some candidates to receive ample

time to learn their jobs without stress from the potential cramming or rushing of information
S Disadvantage - candidates believe the system has

caused a delay in promotions, pay raises, and additional responsibilities for talented, hardworking individuals

Change

S In recent years, this system of has begun to change

because of the tightening labor markets

S In industries such as banking, accounting, insurance, and

high technology environments companies have begun to allow early reviews for requesting individuals
S A guaranteed review after six months of employment is

becoming the new expectation in the eyes of young candidates

Fair?

S This new review system has allowed companies to

reward and retain their highly valued workers but also slow the process for their less-valued employees.

Case Example

S Programmer David Parvin, a recent college graduate, who was

hired by the Cougar Mountain Software Company

S

Parvin demanded a two-week review after being hired and received a 7.1% raise in his salary because of his ability to impress his bosses received a total of 6 raises and1 promotion

S During the next 18 months, Parvin requested frequent reviews and S Cougar Mountains turnover rate among all of its employees is

about 10-percent but among their best employees the rate falls to a slim 1-percent
