It was in the summer of

1888 that Unilever of England firstmarket ed Sunlight soap in

India. This was followed by brandslike Pears and Vim. Vana

spati was l aunched in 1918 andD alda came to the

market in 1937.

In 1931, Unilever set up its first Indian

subsidiary, HindustanV anaspati M anufacturi ng Compa ny, followe

d by Lever Brothers In dia Limited (1933) and United Tra ders Limite

d(1935). T hese three companies merged to form HUL i

nNovember 1956.

A number of prominent companies

came into the HUL fold asresult of Unilevers internationa

l acquisitions . These includedBro oke Bond (1984),

Lipton (1972) and Ponds (1986).

In 1993, Tata Oil

Mills Company (TOMCO) merged with HUL. Two

years later, HUL and yet another Tata company, LakmeLimit

ed, formed a 50:50 joint venture, Lakme

Lever Limited.

Subsequen tly in 1998, Lakme Limited

sold its brands to HULand divested its 50 per cent stake in the

joint venture to theFMCG giant.

HUL formed a

50:50 joint venture with the US-based KimberlyCl ark

Corporatio n in 1994, KimberlyClark Lever Ltd, whichmark

ets Huggies diapers and Kotex sanitary pads.

HUL has also set up a subsidiary in Nepal, Nepal Lever

Limited(NL L), and its factory represents the largest manufactur

inginvestm ent in the Himalayan kingdom. In a historic step,

HULpicked up 74 per cent of the equity of Modern Foods from

theIndian government .

In 2002, HUL acquired

the government s remaining stake inModern Foods.
