ACTIVITY I Observing and Comparing Rocks

I. Objective: Observe and Compare Rocks II. Materials: Different rock samples with the same size. III. Procedure: 1. Collect some rocks of about the same size from different places in your community. Number each rock. 2. Estimate the heaviness of the rocks using your hands. Which rocks are heavy? light? Base on my observation with the use of my hands reveals that rock 1 is heavier among the other rock while rock 2 is lighter. What makes them differ in weight? The rocks differed base on individual mineral content 3. Observe them closely with a magnifying lens. What are their colors? Rock 1 has a color of greyish brown, while rock 2 is brown in color. More over rock 3 has a blue-green color, rock 4 has a brown color, rock 5 is golden brown and rock 6 is gray in colors, respectively. Which has an even color throughout? Among all the other rocks, rock 4 has the most even color throughout. Are they made of different particles? Certainly Yes. 4. Touch the rocks with your hands Do they feel smooth or rough? In terms texture rock 4, rock 5 are smooth. In contrast rock 1, rock 2, rock 3, rock 6 are rough. 5. Rub two pieces of rocks together.

Which rock easily breaks into tiny grains? Rock 3 easily breaks into tiny grains. Which did not? Rock 1,2,4,5,6 are hard enough, hence ,make it difficult to be broken down into smaller particles. What holds the grains together?

6. Place two rocks in a pan of water. Remove after five minutes. Place the rocks on a piece of dry tissue paper. Which rock absorbs much water? Rock 3 absorbs more water compare to others. Which rock did not absorb much water? Due to its compact solid structure rock 6 did not absorb much water. 7. Smell the wet rocks. Which rocks have distinct smell? Rock 5 is the most distinct smell when compared with other rocks. Why do some rocks smell differently from the others?
